Four self-paced professional certifications covering Green Infrastructure planning, design, installation, construction, maintenance, and management — built for the growing field of sustainable stormwater and land development practice.
Green Infrastructure (GI) refers to the strategic integration of natural systems and engineered solutions designed to address environmental challenges in urban and rural landscapes. It incorporates interconnected networks of natural and constructed features — bioretention areas, green roofs, permeable pavements, constructed wetlands, urban forests, rain gardens, and more — that replicate ecological processes to deliver critical services including stormwater management, water quality improvement, climate adaptation, flood mitigation, urban heat reduction, and enhanced public health.
Unlike traditional "gray infrastructure" such as concrete storm drains, Green Infrastructure works with natural processes rather than against them — managing rainfall at its source, reducing runoff, improving water quality, sequestering carbon, and creating more livable, resilient communities. GI is applied at every scale: from a single rain garden on a residential lot to watershed-wide planning frameworks guiding entire cities and regions.
GI intersects with stormwater engineering, landscape architecture, urban planning, environmental compliance, land development, construction, ecology, public policy, and community development — making it one of the most cross-disciplinary fields in the built environment today.
Each certification is a standalone credential. Complete all four to earn the prestigious Master of Green Infrastructure designation.
Covers the principles, strategies, and techniques of Green Infrastructure and Low Impact Development (LID) at the planning and design level. Includes stormwater management approaches, GI component types, site assessment fundamentals, regulatory frameworks, and real-world case studies from cities across the United States.
Focuses on the practical installation and construction of Green Infrastructure practices. Covers materials, methods, site preparation, quality control, contractor responsibilities, sequencing, and field application of bioretention, permeable pavement, green roofs, and related LID best management practices.
Equips professionals with the knowledge and skills to ensure the long-term success of Green Infrastructure systems. Covers lifecycle management, inspection protocols, routine and advanced maintenance, troubleshooting and repair, MS4 permit compliance, cost forecasting, and future innovations including AI monitoring and climate adaptation.
The highest professional credential offered by MidAmerica Watersheds Alliance. Certification 4 is a fully standalone certification available individually at $299, or included in the complete package. It may be pursued immediately after passing Certifications 1, 2, and 3 — or years later as your career develops. There is no time limit between certifications.
This advanced certification covers ecological systems and landscape architecture theory, watershed planning at the regional scale, advanced site design, materials science, planting ecology, and performance evaluation. Earning this credential signifies professional leadership in Green Infrastructure at the landscape architecture and watershed planning level — demonstrating comprehensive mastery across all disciplines of the field.
Also included in the complete package ($899 for all four certifications)
Purchase all four Green Infrastructure certifications together at a reduced cost — Green Infrastructure Planning and Design, Green Infrastructure Installation and Construction, Green Infrastructure Maintenance and Management, and Certification 4: Master of Green Infrastructure. Each certification has its own coursework, modules, and final exam that must be individually studied for and passed. Certification 4 is unlocked after passing Certifications 1, 2, and 3 — only upon passing all four do you earn the Master of Green Infrastructure credential. Package includes one $50 retry option per certification final exam if needed.
